Music Theory Lessons Near Me, Online With Griffin V

If you are searching for guitar lessons near me in Austin, I teach live, one-on-one lessons both in person and online. I am Griffin V, and I focus on practical, player-friendly guitar instruction, including music theory you can apply to the fretboard right away.

How Guitar Lessons Work With Me

For students in Austin, I travel to you and teach in person at your home or studio. I also teach live online for students anywhere with a reliable internet connection. Either way, sessions are built around your goals, your playing level, and the music you actually want to play. Before the first session, I ask a few quick questions about your background, the styles you love, and what you want to accomplish in the next 1 to 3 months. That helps me design a plan so you know exactly what we are working on and why.

During lessons, I share a clean set of visual materials: fretboard diagrams, interval charts, scale and chord maps, and Roman numeral analysis when it is useful. You leave each lesson with a short, focused practice plan and notes that recap the key ideas. We apply every concept to actual songs so nothing stays abstract for long.

Who I Teach

I work with complete beginners, self-taught guitarists who want to connect the dots, gigging musicians who need to read changes more confidently, and songwriters who want stronger progressions. If you are brand new, we start with the basics: chords, strumming, and reading simple charts. If you have been playing for years, we go into functional harmony, modal color, extended chords, and whatever is most relevant to your goals on the instrument.

My background is in teaching and performing over the past 20 years, and that experience taught me to keep the focus on music you actually play. One specialty I bring is New Standard Tuning, an alternative guitar tuning that opens up different voicings and approaches for players who want something beyond standard EADGBE.

Guitar is my main focus, and I also teach bass, singing, piano, drums, and mandolin, so if you have a household with players on different instruments, I can work with all of you.

What We Cover In A Lesson

Every session has a simple structure that keeps it musical and efficient:

Check in: what you practiced, what felt easy or hard, and anything you want feedback on. Skill builder: a focused concept, like a new chord shape, a scale pattern, or a technique you can master that session. Application: we put the concept into a real song you want to play or write. Ear and time: short ear training and rhythm work tied to music you already know, so it sticks. Wrap: a clear, written plan for the week, usually 10 to 15 minutes a day of targeted practice. In Person Or Online

If you are in Austin, I travel to your location for in-person lessons, which most students prefer for hands-on instrument work. If online fits your schedule better, or you are outside the Austin area, we teach live over video with shared charts, screen sharing, and the option to record the session for review. Both formats get the same lesson quality and structure. The format serves you, not the other way around.

What You Need

For in-person lessons, just have your guitar ready and a space to sit and play. For online lessons, you need a stable internet connection, a device with a camera and microphone, and your guitar. Headphones help for hearing subtle differences, but speakers work too.

How We Apply Theory To Guitar

We map intervals and triads to string sets, then to CAGED shapes or movable patterns so you see and hear relationships everywhere on the neck. Voice leading becomes physical, not abstract. For students working in New Standard Tuning, we rebuild these same concepts around the new intervals so the fretboard logic still makes sense.

How Fast Will I See Progress

If you practice 10 to 15 minutes a day, you will usually feel a shift in the first two weeks. Chord changes get smoother, you start naming what you are playing, and you can explain why your favorite song works the way it does. In a month, most students can play through several songs cleanly and understand the basic harmony behind them. In a few months, you will likely be reharmonizing, choosing stronger notes, and picking up new songs faster on your own.

Common Roadblocks, Solved Theory feels abstract. We fix that by applying every idea to a song in the same session. You forget between lessons. I share clear notes so you know what to work on. You play by shapes but do not know the names. We label those shapes with function so your muscle memory gains meaning without losing speed. Progress feels slow. We keep assignments small and musical so they fit into a real life and compound week to week.

Scheduling And Rates I teach both in person around Austin and live online, with flexible scheduling to fit your week. My current rate is $60 per lesson. I also offer a four lesson package for $200, which works out to $50 per lesson for students who commit to a monthly schedule. Some students like a weekly lesson. Others prefer every other week with a little more homework in between. We will find a cadence that fits your life and still moves you forward.
