Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before booking with Lynn.
What ages do you teach?
Teens, adults, and seniors
Can I start as a complete beginner?
Absolutely. As a beginner, I would first clarify what your writing goal is and then build a lesson plan based on that. Since I teach creative writing, my focus is not on things such as spelling, grammar, and punctuation, although I'll point that out if that's something you need to work and can give you references.
Where do lessons take place?
I teach all my students online. Once you schedule a class, I will send you a line to join me on a Zoom call. I will review your work, however, offline but send you my notes in advance and then be prepared to discuss your work at the next scheduled lesson.
Can I take a lesson with a friend or family member?
I prefer to teach one-on-one because each student has different goals and objectives in their writing, and it can get complicated to try and meet everyone's individual goals in a single session.
What happens during the first lesson?
That depends. If want to learn how to write a novel, the first class would begin by talking about what's entailed in writing a novel, what the different (and necessary) components are, and where and how to begin. If you prefer me to work with copy you've already written, you would send me that in advance, along with your specific goals and objectives. I would review your copy, send back written feedback in advance, and then schedule a Zoom call to discuss. Other types of projects would need to be discussed with me in advance.
What should I bring to my first lesson?
An open mind and a way to take notes. On the other hand, if you've given me written copy to review, I would expect you to have that plus my written feedback to discuss during the Zoom call. Also, any questions you might have.
What if I have an entire short story or novel I need help with?
A novel is probably beyond the scope of what we can accomplish through online classes. I could, however, review and work with you on a short story or essay that you already have in draft form.
