Annotation is, "The act or process of furnishing critical commentary or explanatory notes." (American Heritage Dictionary) In simpler terms, it's writing in your book. What kinds of things should you write in the margin of your favorite books? How do you begin annotating? I'm glad you asked! Start by creating a _simple _system. This system is what you will use for that one book. It can range from just a pencil to four highlighters. Find whatever works for you.

Here's a list of annotations:

• Mark the words you don't understand. Strive to write down what you think the definition is. Then look up the actual definition.
• Mark your thoughts in the book. Be sure to write thoughts after major sections of the book
• Mark key points in the book See if you can condense the book into key points
• Underline phrases that impact you the most. Never let a great sentence go to waste!

There are so many other important things you should mark in your books, but those are a few to get you started. Always take a moment to think about what you've read.
