What to Expect During Your First Tennis Lesson
By Napoleon Araoarao, Tennis coach in Riverside, California
Starting tennis can feel exciting, but it can also be a little intimidating. You may wonder whether you need experience, what equipment to bring, or whether you are athletic enough to begin.
The good news is that you do not need to know anything about tennis before your first lesson. My job as a coach is to meet you at your current level and help you improve from there.
Your Lesson Will Be Based on Your Experience Every player begins with different goals and abilities. Some players have never held a tennis racket, while others may already play recreationally, on a school team, or in competitive tournaments.
At the beginning of the lesson, I will ask about your experience and what you would like to accomplish. Your goals might include:
- Learning the basic strokes
- Becoming more consistent
- Improving your serve
- Preparing for school tryouts
- Developing better footwork and movement
- Learning match strategy
- Getting exercise while enjoying a new sport
Your lesson will be adjusted to fit your age, experience, learning style, and goals.
We Will Begin With the Fundamentals Beginner players usually start by learning the proper grip, ready position, contact point, and follow-through. These fundamentals create a strong foundation for every tennis stroke.
Instead of immediately hitting difficult shots from the baseline, we may begin closer to the net. Starting at a shorter distance helps players develop control and understand how the ball reacts to the racket.
As you become more comfortable, we can gradually move farther back and work on:
- Forehands
- Backhands
- Volleys
- Serves
- Footwork
- Rallying
- Point play
The goal is not to master everything during one lesson. The goal is to understand the basics and begin developing confidence.
Mistakes Are Part of Learning Many new players become frustrated when the ball goes into the net or outside the court. That is completely normal.
Tennis requires timing, coordination, movement, and repetition. Even experienced players make mistakes during practices and matches. Players improve by learning what happened, making a small adjustment, and trying again.
During lessons, I focus on giving clear and useful feedback without overwhelming the player. We may concentrate on one or two corrections at a time so that improvement feels manageable.
Effort, attitude, and coachability are often more important than performing every skill perfectly.
