Pickleball tips
Russ Lombardo · Pickleball coach in Cary, NC

If you and your partner want to win more rallies today, start talking sooner, simpler, and more often. I’m Russ Lombardo, and these pickleball doubles communication tips come straight from coaching Cary-area players. Call the plan before the serve, claim balls out loud during the point, and finish each rally with a quick debrief so the next one is cleaner.
Most points are decided by positioning, timing, and decisions, not just shot quality. I see teams lose winnable points because nobody called the middle, covered the lob, or announced the third-shot plan. Communication turns two decent players into one connected team. It reduces hesitation, prevents collisions, and frees your paddle to execute.
Hesitation in the middle costs more points than missed dinks. Use clear, early, single-word calls.
A quick rule of thumb for most righty-righty teams: the player on the left has forehand-middle priority on shoulder-high balls, and the player who is stepping in with momentum takes knee-high middle balls. The call still matters, because your partner cannot read your momentum as fast as you can feel it.
Not every partnership needs complicated hand signals, but two non-verbal cues help immediately during serve games:
Use body language too. If your partner sees you crowd the middle, they should say “I’ve got line,” then shade slightly that way. If you shade back a step on return, your partner should echo “lob ready.” Silent alignment is still communication, and it reduces the need for mid-rally heroics.
Think of your team as a rectangle that slides together. If you return from deep and your partner sprints all the way to the kitchen alone, you have created a giant gap. Move in tandem.
Hard hitters and lobbers show up in every court. You can handle both with pre-agreed roles.
Against bangers:
Against lobbers:
High-pace kitchen exchanges are not the time for speeches. Keep phrases short and universal.
Pick one or two you love and stick with them. Consistency beats cleverness.
If you rotate partners at busy sessions, build trust in three steps:
Yes. I see this often when friends of different experience levels pair up. Set role boundaries that match comfort.
This keeps nerves down and confidence up, and you still play proactive pickleball as a unit.
Before you leave the park, run this simple debrief:
You will carry that clarity into the next session.
If you are ready to turn two players into one confident team, book a session and we will put these pickleball doubles communication tips into action on a local court. I will bring the drills and the plan, you bring your energy.
