Russ Lombardo · Pickleball coach in Cary, NC

If you are looking for pickleball reset drills you can run today, here are the exact progressions I teach to turn fast, frantic rallies into soft, controlled neutral balls. I am Russ Lombardo, a PCI-certified coach, and these drills build touch, height, and depth control so you can survive drives, drop the ball into the kitchen, and take back the point.
A reset is a soft shot that takes a fast or awkward ball and drops it into your opponent’s kitchen, buying you time to regain neutral positioning. You are not trying to attack, you are trying to make the rally boring again so you can advance to the non-volley zone and play your best pickleball. In local play around Cary, Raleigh, Durham, and Apex, resets decide a lot of points because they neutralize bangers and clean up errors when a rally speeds up.
The key ingredients are: soft hands, slightly open paddle face, compact swing, and a mindset that trades pace for placement. If you work these consistently, you will notice your unforced errors drop and your confidence rise when rallies get chaotic.
The Triangle gets humid afternoons, cool mornings, and the occasional gusty day. Here is how I set up reset practice at local courts:
These start simple, then add pressure. Work through them slowly and repeat the ones that feel hardest.
Against a firm drive on public courts in Raleigh, Durham, Apex, or Cary, your highest percentage option is the block reset. Use a compact set, quiet wrist, and a relaxed hand, then let the ball’s pace do the work. If the drive dips at your feet in transition, treat it like a drop-reset with a slightly more open face and a gentle lift. When the ball arrives higher at your sternum, firm up the grip a little and block it down to the kitchen.
If a banger camps at mid-court, aim middle. You remove angles, invite a clash in their communication, and give yourself more space for error. If they are right on top of the line, float a slightly deeper reset that bounces near their feet to force an upward contact.
When you cannot meet a partner at the courts, you can still train:
Record yourself for 5 minutes. Most players are surprised to see how much they flick at the wrist or lean backward during contact. Fixing those two habits pays off quickly.
Here are the issues I correct most often, plus quick fixes you can use today.
If you want a single tune-up on resets, book a Single 1-hour Lesson at $69. If you are serious about turning this into a strength, my Intermediate/Advanced 4-Pack is $55 per 60-minute lesson. We will identify your priority scenarios, for example handling bangers, cleaning up transition footwork, or building touch from both sides, then stack targeted drills with gameplay. Beginners who want to build from the ground up can also use the Beginner 4-Pack at the same $55 per lesson, and I will weave in reset fundamentals alongside serves, returns, and dinks.
If you are ready to make your resets reliable and calm down the chaos at the kitchen, book a lesson and let’s get started. I would love to help you build touch and play with more confidence in Cary, Apex, Raleigh, or Durham.
