Ever feel like you’re not sure what career path is best for you? Maybe you have been listening to the adults in your life, but even their greatest intentions are clouding your choices? The old belief of knowing what you want to be when you grow up is not helping either. Let’s…
Being raised by a single mom on the south side of Milwaukee, we never had a lot of money for me to go to College like I wanted to with all my friends. I just felt alone and confused. Left out really. Andrea helped me out of a deep depression even though she’s not a therapist. We didn’t actually sit down for formal advising or anything, but she worked with my mom to make payments and we went for walks at Humboldt Park. She really understood my background as an ESL student, but also being on the spectrum like myself and all the obstacles growing up on the southside in Bayview. Sometimes advising and mentoring doesn’t take place in books or on paper. Now I’ve been in MATC for about five weeks. I’m actually enjoying College and my friends are stressed out to the max at big universities with big tuition bills. It might sound crazy, but. Dea is my friend and she is a better teacher than any of my actual school teachers were. We still talk even though my mom doesn’t pay her anymore. That’s who Drea is to our family.

My parents wanted me to go to college immediately after high school. I definitely wanted to go in the military, but we agreed I would see Andrea first as a compromise. She helped me understand that a good compromise was taking a gap here. Now I’m volunteering at the Veterans home in Union Grove and I’m still not sure if I want to enlist or go to college but I’m learning more about myself. Thanks, Andrea.
