If you are searching for the best surf lessons Newport Beach, I can help you get to your feet and into real waves safely and quickly. I am Parker Monroe, and I teach practical, ocean-first surfing in the exact conditions we get here in Newport Beach so you can keep progressing on your own between sessions.
What Makes A Great Surf Lesson In Newport Beach?
A great lesson here is more than standing up once. Newport offers a wide range of beach breaks that change with tide and swell, so winning lessons focus on timing, reading sandbars, and choosing the right spot for the day. With 20 years of experience riding these waters, I tailor each session to the actual sandbar and forecast we have, not a scripted checklist.
Beginners learn clean fundamentals that translate to any board: safe positioning in the lineup, efficient paddling, a smooth pop-up, and trimming down the line instead of just riding straight. For progressing surfers, we work on wave selection, paddling angles, speed generation, and first cutbacks on open-face runners. The goal is simple: real ocean skills you can repeat the next time you paddle out.
Where Do Surf Lessons Happen In Newport Beach?
I teach at several dependable Newport Beach spots, picking the best sandbar for the day:
Blackies: Friendly waves by the Newport Pier, excellent for first sessions and small swells.
40th Street: Reliable peaks with room to spread out, great for fundamentals and trimming.
54th Street Beach: Punchier sandbars when the swell has a bit more push, good for timing and takeoff angles.
When conditions suggest a smoother setup nearby, I also use Huntington Beach: mainly the pier and Cliffs. These are quick hops from Newport and often give us cleaner faces or more forgiving conditions when Newport closed out or too far from you.
Who Are My Lessons For? From First Wave To First Cutback
I love working with absolute beginners who want a calm, clear first experience, and I also coach returning surfers who need to reconnect the dots after a few false starts. If you are just starting, our time is about safety, stance, and feeling that first glide. If you are already catching whitewater, we will transition you to angled takeoffs, trimming to the open face, and reading the shoulder.

Let's ride a natural element.
Riding a natural element is a feeling like no other, and I'm passionate about sharing that joy with others. As an avid surfer with 20 years of experience riding the ocean, I've honed my skills as an amateur surfer and love guiding others as they progress. I'm dedicated to creating a fun, supportive learning environment where you can confidently build your wave riding skills and hopefully deepen your connection with the ocean.
For those with some experience, the focus shifts to: setting a better line from the takeoff, using your chest and forearms to manage speed, pumping, and early cutback patterns on shoulder-high runners. Every drill is tied to the specific wave shape we have that day. Newportβs banks change week to week, so you learn to adapt in real time.
What We Do In A 60-Minute Session?
Here is how a typical 60-minute lesson flows, with adjustments for swell, wind, and your level:
Beach brief, 3-5 minutes: Basic water safety first. Next, we cover the pop-up sequence and stance, before heading out into the water.
Whitewater reps, 30 minutes: For first-timers, we start with gentle whitewater to lock in foot placement and balance. Returning surfers do angled whitewater takeoffs to build the habit of trimming down the line.
Green-wave entries, 20-30 minutes: We may shift to catching unbroken waves depending on your skill level. Using correct positioning, paddling technique, and takeoff angles that match the peak. This is where timing clicks. If you are still learning the basics this will come later.
Feedback loop, ongoing: Between each wave we tag quick pointers. Expect short, specific cues like eyes up, feet together, or shoulder lead into the line.
Wrap-up, 5 minutes: We review wins and next steps you can practice in your next session.
I keep cues simple and repeatable so you can carry them into any lineup. Every session ends with a clear practice plan.
Do I Need My Own Board Or Wetsuit?
If you have a board you would like to learn on, bring it. Familiarity helps. If not, I have two soft top long boards and one large volume fiberglass short board you can use. Soft tops are extra forgiving for first-timers and soft days, and the harder short board helps progressing surfers who want to feel a bit more performance while keeping plenty of paddle power.
I do not provide wetsuits. If you need help choosing or renting one, message me and I will point you in the right direction based on the time of year and your tolerance. A snug fit is more important than thickness if you are in between sizes, and a back-zip or chest-zip both work. Bring sunscreen, water, and a towel.
Choosing The Right Tide, Swell, And Season In Newport
Newportβs beach breaks are tide sensitive. Mid tide often gives beginners the best combination of push and shape, and it is usually where we start unless the sandbars suggest otherwise. On small swells, Blackies and nearby peaks get more consistent waves. When the swell bumps up a notch, 40th Street or 54th Street Beach can light up with cleaner shoulders that are perfect for learning to pick a line and pump.
Wind is our other big variable. Morning glass is ideal, but even with a light breeze we can find protected corners and still get quality reps. The point is to match your lesson time to the forecast, not force a plan. I keep an eye on the daily conditions and will suggest the best window for the day you book.
Safety First, Confidence Always
Your first few sessions are all about building ocean comfort. Newport has plenty of shallow sandbars where you can stand most of the time while learning to paddle, turn, and pop up. We cover how to fall safely, protect your head, and choose a paddle line that avoids other surfers. Small habits like keeping your board perpendicular to oncoming whitewater or staying just to the shoulder of the peak make a big difference.

Both options include board use if you need it, spot selection for the dayβs conditions, and a clear post-session plan so you know exactly what to practice before your next lesson.
What Students Say
Real feedback from local sessions says more than I ever could:
Jessica: Parker provided such a calm and safe presence throughout our session. I already feel more comfortable in the water.
Thomas: Popping up on the board was tricky for me. Parker gave me some great tips which really helped.
Matthew: Awesome instructor, would not hesitate to do again.
I am grateful for a 5-star average across 57 reviews, with 113 completed lessons. If you value a relaxed, practical approach that builds good habits, we will work well together.
How I Coach Beginners Differently
Many first-timers are taught to run straight to their feet, then hope balance appears. I slow the takeoff just enough to help you feel stability before standing, then cue a smooth, low pop-up technique I like to call the "drop knee." This will teach you the correct fundamentals of controlled and balanced pop up without throwing you into the deep end immediately.
When you are ready, we layer in paddle strategy. That means starting your sprint one board-length earlier when the peak has more draw, shifting to a slightly steeper angle on peaky sandbars, and using a quiet head position so your board tracks straight. These are small details, but in changing Newport conditions they add up fast.
Can I Get The Best Surf Lessons Newport Beach As A Returning Surfer?
Yes. If you have paddled out a few times and are not quite linking rides, I will help you target the one or two blocks that are holding you back. Often it is starting too deep on fast peaks or looking at your feet during the pop-up. We fix the entry angle, set the line earlier, and build a repeatable pattern you can bring to any sandbar from Blackies to 54th Street Beach. This is where many students feel a big leap in confidence.
Your First Session Checklist
Board: Bring your own if you have one, or borrow one of mine.
Wetsuit: Bring a snug, comfortable suit appropriate for the season.
Sunscreen and water: Hydrate and protect your skin, especially during longer morning windows.
Can I use your boards for my lesson in Newport Beach?
Yes. I have two soft top long boards and one large volume fiberglass short board available for students. If you have your own board, I encourage you to bring it so we build skills on the equipment you will ride most.
How quickly can a beginner catch a wave in Newport Beach?
Most beginners feel their first glide in whitewater during the first session, then progress to unbroken waves as timing improves. Your results depend on conditions, board choice, and how consistently you practice the core steps we cover.
